SOMEONE ELSE'S TERM PROJECT PRESENTATION

There was a presentation done on P2P file sharing. The basic concept of this presentation was discussing the ways people illegally download certain programs or files that are copy righted. How some government companies try to crack down on websites that share files illegally. He discussed programs like Limewire and Napster, which allow users to download various files from music to actual programs that are sold on the market. The presentation has good visuals and information that explained alot of things that might be known about P2P file sharing.

MY TERM RESEARCH PROJECT

For my presentation, i would be discussing the ways literacy has adapted in the new media age. Things like education systems, news media, and literary works. How media influences children at a young age, how it affects their attention span or affect their work in schools. I would also be discussing the ways newspaper companies have adapted to the vast internet sources that are avaliable online.

THE NEXT NEW THING

A new type of media that should be developed is a virtual reality where a user could feel the current moment of a certain situation. For example if a person wanted to go to a basketball game, but couldn't make it for personal reasons. He/she could pay a lower price for a ticket, but have the opportunity to feel the game, see or hear the actual things that go on during the game. To feel the tension and what not that comes along in regards to going to a real game. Another example of a virtual reality use, is for a user to travel to a place and sight see the many things that he/she couldn't possibly see because of lack of money. This would be great for people who have severe disabilities where they could not leave the house or other things that prevent them from traveling.

ADVICE TO BARUCH COLLEGE

If i were to be hired by Baruch to improve their college through ways of using new media i would recommend more lectures to be avaliable online, where a student could watch a video of their professor in the comfort of their home. Also i would suggest having classes avaliable online, where a student completes their class and assignments completely on the internet. This would be much easier because a student could watch lectures at anytime of the day. Which would allow them to learn at a comfortable time or learn at a time where it would allow a student to process information at their full potential.

OLD VS. NEW

This term "new media" could be described in many ways, but what aspect of this new media really differs from the term "old media" is how advance our technology is today. People in the past would have never thought of having so much use for the internet or how avaliable information is on the web. Information gather today is more sufficient and much faster then it was in the past. Before digital televison came out, before the internet came out, media was portrayed or discussed in various radio talk shows, or in newspaper articles. Also news were spread by word of mouth. Nowadays people still listen to the radio or read articles, but their avaliablity now wasn't as vast was it was before the computer or internet was invented. For news articles, people could find almost any article they want by searching for the date or topic it was covering. In the past people couldn't find old articles unless they searched for this newspaper that had it. Sports games could be watched online, or recorded on television technologies like Tivo. Programs like Tivo record the show while your not home, so one could access and watch on their time.

MODELING REALITY WITH VIRTUAL WORLDS

Virtual worlds are quickly rising in our society. There are various forms of virtual reality, from role playing games to training problems developed by programmers. In regards to mass-multiplayer online role playing games people could design their avatar and perform things that might be avaliable to do in real life. Avatars are basically the characters that a user can design in regards to clothing and actions. These avatars are used in these virtual worlds to communicate to others and create a community of gamers. Games like second life, allow a user to complete actions that they possibly wouldn't do in real life. The avatars could complete actions like dancing, partying, chatting, and etc. make his avatar fly or dress them to look like something out of this world. Some companies use second life to train their employees. With this training employees feel more comfortable because they can train and communite with their peers in their homes. Also in the medical field, there is rumors about having a program that allows a doctor to train with using these programs to practice certain surgey types or give them a background to certain situations. With these training programs there is a two sided debate with this, on one hand people could train easier in their field with a hands on view of situations, but on the other hand these programs may not be as accurate as it were in real life. Things that happen in life are unexpected and one could not determine the absolute outcome of situations. Therefore the "dark side"of these virtual realities could possibility create an unreal world, where people might adapt to their mindset. In the future, these virtual reality programs might evolve to the point where the user actually feels what is going on in these worlds. To be in the actual world might be the ideas of our future advancement in technology.

CHECKING OUT SOME SOCIAL NETWORKING SITES

Today many people use these social networking sites like Myspace or Facebook. I have a facebook account myself, and my impression on it is that it is useful to meet new people or build up relationships with people, whom might be reliable in the future. Sites like facebook and myspace have created their own little community that promote meeting new people. Nowadays there are programs on facebook that notify a user that one might know he/she. With this program it is very useful because there could be a person whom one hasn't spoken to in awhile. With this new program it is easier for a person to find old friends whom they went to school with or old childhood friends in which they lost contact with. Also with people who are very shy in person, these sites may help boost their self esteem in regards to communicating with others. These sites also allowed the user to post up pictures in which their friends could comment or post other things similar to theirs. Even though they maybe those few people who prey on users and commit acts that are unethical, it is still a good tool to use in creating a networking community in our society. Overall the invention of these sites are pretty useful and maybe be proven to be more useful in the future.
